We are planning two special morning daytrips for native plant lovers! Trek into the freshwater wetlands to see the rare flowering perennial Hibiscus grandiflorus, or swamp rosemallow. This flower is rarely seen by humans because it grows only in a particularly secluded habitat and its blossoms open only at dawn and dusk, closing against the heat of the summer sun for all but a few hours each day.
A small group will depart by boat in the early morning from Hampton River Marina. Once on Little St. Simons Island, guests will suit up in rubber boots and mosquito nets and travel by naturalist truck and on foot through dense maritime forest to reach the interior wetlands where giant, pink Hibiscus blossoms will be on full display. This trek is for the intrepid adventurer - temperatures will be high and mosquitoes may be plentiful, but the reward is worth it. After visiting the mallows, guests will take a quick trip to Myrtle Pond to visit one of our wildlife blinds.
After the trek, the group will visit the Lodge and enjoy pastries and coffee. The boat will return to Hampton River Marina at 11:00 am.
