Event Host ~ Kate Ferguson

Kate was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama, where she started camping before she could walk. She developed her love of nature through playing in the woods and spending summers on road trips and backpacking trips throughout the country, where she was immersed in various environments and ecosystems. Wanting to understand more about them, she pursued her bachelor's in biology from the University of South Alabama with a focus on marine science and chemistry. During her time there, she spent summers at Dauphin Island Sea Lab and participated on a project studying the occurrence of ciguatera in the Bahamas. Before coming to LSSI, she worked at a summer camp in Maine teaching young boys to fish, swim, canoe, and kayak, and later she worked on a sailing catamaran as the First Mate. She spends her free time hiking, fishing, kayaking, and reading.
