Ornithology WorkshopJune 5 - June 9, 2022

Summer on the island brings an abundance of nesting birds, including species of concern like American Oystercatchers, Wood Storks, and Painted Buntings. Each year, LSSI staff from the Center for Coastal Conservation monitor these species and host visiting ornithologists who study them in an effort to further bird conservation. This special event will bring you alongside ornithologists to see how research is done and learn about conservation efforts on the island and beyond. With a maximum capacity of only 10 participants, this is a unique opportunity to get a personal look into the world of bird conservation and research.

Excursions will take us out on the island in potentially intense or strenuous conditions. To be able to fully participate in all event experiences, guests must be tolerant of heat and humidity, mosquitoes, and able to ride a bike for up to 6 miles.

Participants must be at least 12 years of age.

Package rates include lodging, three meals daily prepared by our chefs, non-alcoholic beverages, all Island activities including guided Naturalist excursions and use of recreation gear as well as boat transfers to and from the island.

Activities

Fieldwork: observe and assist LSSI staff and research partners on nesting bird monitoring excursions

Demonstrations: guest ornithologists will showcase methods they use to study birds

Evening Presentations: learn about local bird conservation efforts

Naturalist-led Adventures: afternoon time each day to explore the island via naturalist-led excursions (ie. kayaking, safari excursions, beach-combing, birding, fishing)

Terms & Conditions

All rates are for double occupancy in The Hunting Lodge, River Lodge, Cedar House or Helen House. The Tom House and Michael Cottage rates are higher.  An additional adult in the same room is $250 per night and children under 12 are $150 per night. An 18% service charge plus applicable taxes will be added to the above rates.
